How to Redeem a Nintendo Switch Game Code — Every Method (2026)

3 min read
Just bought a Nintendo Switch game code and not sure how to redeem it? Here's every method — on your Nintendo Switch console and on a web browser from any device. Works for Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Before You Start — What You Need to Know
A few things to check before redeeming:
- Codes are 16 characters in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. The letters I, O, and Z are never used — if you see one it's actually a number (1, 0, or 2)
- Download code vs Control Number — some retailer cards include both. The download code usually starts with B and has no hyphens. The control number usually starts with S and has hyphens. Enter the download code only.
- Region locked — your code must match the region of your Nintendo Account. A US code won't work on a European account.
- One use only — once redeemed on any Nintendo Account, the code cannot be used again.
- Copy and paste your code if you received it digitally — never type it manually.
Method 1: Nintendo Switch Console
Redeem your code on Nintendo Switch
- 01Make sure your Nintendo Switch is connected to the internet. From the HOME Menu, select the Nintendo eShop icon (the orange shopping bag).
- 02Select the user account you want to use. Make sure this is the correct Nintendo Account — the game will be tied to whichever account you select here.
- 03In the left sidebar, scroll down and select Enter Code.
- 04Type in your 16-character code using the on-screen keyboard. The Switch automatically capitalizes letters. Select OK to confirm.
- 05A confirmation screen will show you what you're about to redeem. Check it matches what you expected, then confirm. The game icon will appear on your HOME Menu with a download progress bar. Once the download is complete the game is ready to play.
Method 2: Web Browser (No Console Needed)
You can redeem a Nintendo Switch code from any web browser on your PC, phone, or tablet — no console needed. This is the easiest method if you're not near your Switch.
Important: you must have accessed the Nintendo eShop on your Switch at least once before using the web redemption method. This links your Nintendo Account to the eShop.
- Open any browser and go to ec.nintendo.com/redeem
- Click Sign In and enter your Nintendo Account email and password. If already signed in, check the username in the top-right corner to confirm it's the correct account.
- Enter your 16-character code and click Next
- Re-enter your Nintendo Account password when prompted
- Click Redeem to complete
The game is now added to your Nintendo Account. Next time you open the Nintendo eShop on your Switch it will be available to download. A confirmation email will also be sent to your Nintendo Account email address.
Can I Redeem on the Nintendo Switch Online Mobile App?
No. The Nintendo Switch Online mobile app does not support code redemption. This is a common mistake. The app is only for voice chat, NSO features, and managing your membership. If you want to redeem on your phone, open Safari, Chrome, or any web browser and go to ec.nintendo.com/redeem — this works perfectly on mobile.
Common Issues When Redeeming
- "This code has already been used" — the code was already redeemed. Check your purchase history at accounts.nintendo.com → Store → Funds and Payment Methods → Purchase History to see if it's on your account already. If not, contact the seller. Full guide here.
- Error 2813-6561 or 2813-6838 — wrong region code. Your code must match your Nintendo Account region. Full guide here.
- Error 2813-0055 — the code has expired or the content isn't released yet in your region. Check the release date.
- Error 2811-6058 — too many failed attempts. Wait 15-30 minutes before trying again.
- "This is a Nintendo Switch 2 download code" — the code is for Nintendo Switch 2 and cannot be redeemed on the original Nintendo Switch.
