How to Fix Nintendo Error 2813-6561 / 2813-6838 — Wrong Region Code
How to fix Nintendo error 2813-6561 and 2813-6838 wrong region code

You try to redeem your Nintendo code and get error 2813-6561 or 2813-6838. Here's exactly what each one means and how to fix it.

What Do These Errors Mean?

Error 2813-6561 — "The code you entered was not recognized. Please check it and try again." This appears when a download code for a game or DLC is entered incorrectly or is intended for a different region's Nintendo eShop. Error 2813-6838 — This appears specifically when a Nintendo eShop gift card cannot be processed — usually because the card is from a different region or there is an activation delay. Both errors come down to the same core issue: Nintendo codes are region locked. A code purchased for the US eShop will not work on a European Nintendo Account, and vice versa. The code and your Nintendo Account must be from the same region.

Step 1 — Check the Code for Typos First

Before assuming it's a region issue, double-check the code itself. Nintendo codes are 16 characters in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX and easy to misread.
  • The letters I, O, and Z are never used in Nintendo codes — if you see what looks like one, it's actually a number (1, 0, or 2)
  • An 8 can look like a 3, and a K can look like an X
  • Nintendo codes are not case sensitive
  • If you received the code digitally, copy and paste it instead of typing manually
Try entering the code again from scratch. If the error persists after re-entering carefully, the code is almost certainly from the wrong region.

Step 2 — Check Your Nintendo Account Region

  1. 01

Go to accounts.nintendo.com and sign in.

  2. 02

Click your profile icon and select Profile. Your Country/Region is displayed here — this is the region your Nintendo Account is set to and determines which eShop you have access to.

Compare your account region to the region of your code. A US code only works on a Nintendo Account set to a US region. A European code only works on a European Nintendo Account. They must match exactly.

How to Tell What Region Your Code Is From

If you're not sure which region your code is for, here's how to check:
  • Physical game packaging — look for a rating logo. ESRB rating means the code is for the Americas. PEGI or USK rating means it's for Europe. CERO rating means it's for Japan.
  • The seller or retailer — check where the seller is located. A US-based retailer sells US region codes. A European retailer sells European codes.
  • Contact the seller directly and ask which region the code is intended for.

What to Do If Your Code Is the Wrong Region

If you've confirmed the code is from a different region than your Nintendo Account, you have two options: Option 1 — Contact the seller for a replacement
This is the best option. Contact the seller with your proof of purchase and request a replacement code in the correct region for your Nintendo Account. If you bought your code from GhostKeys, create a support ticket and we'll resolve it for you. Option 2 — Create a new Nintendo Account in the matching region
If you want to use the code as-is, you can create a new Nintendo Account set to the same region as the code and redeem it there. Go to accounts.nintendo.com, create a new account, set the country to match the code region, and redeem the code on that account. Note that content purchased on one Nintendo Account cannot be transferred to another account.

Special Case: Error 2813-6838 — Activation Delay

If you are getting error 2813-6838 specifically on a Nintendo eShop gift card and you have confirmed the region is correct, this error can also indicate an activation delay. Some physical cards are not immediately activated after purchase. In this case:
  1. Verify you are entering the code correctly
  2. Wait 24 hours and try redeeming again
  3. If the error persists after 24 hours, contact the retailer where the card was purchased — the card may not have been properly activated at point of sale
  4. If the retailer cannot help, contact Nintendo Support directly

Special Case: Code Must Be Redeemed In-Game

If you are getting error 2813-6561 and you have confirmed the code is the correct region and entered it correctly — it's possible the code cannot be redeemed through the Nintendo eShop and must instead be entered directly within the game itself. This is common with DLC bonus codes, promotional codes, and in-game currency codes included with physical game purchases. Check the packaging, card, or email that came with the code for specific redemption instructions before contacting support.
