How to Fix "This Code Has Already Been Used" Nintendo Error
How to fix This Code Has Already Been Used Nintendo eShop error

You enter your Nintendo download code and get the message "This Code Has Already Been Used" or "This download code has already been used." Here's exactly what that means, what to check first, and how to get it resolved.

What This Error Actually Means

This message means the 16-character code you entered has already been redeemed on a Nintendo Account. Once a Nintendo code is used, it cannot be redeemed again — on any account. There are three possible explanations:
  1. You already redeemed it yourself — possibly on a different Nintendo Account or on a different console, and forgot
  2. Someone else redeemed it before you — either the code was sold to multiple people, or it was intercepted before you received it
  3. You're entering the wrong code — Nintendo codes are 16 characters and easy to misread. Some characters look similar (0 and 8, 5 and 2). Note: Nintendo codes never contain the letters I, O, or Z

Step 1 — Double Check the Code First

Before anything else — verify you're entering the correct code exactly as it appears.
  • Nintendo codes are 16 characters in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
  • The letters I, O, and Z are never used in Nintendo codes — if you see what looks like one, it's actually a number (1, 0, or 2)
  • A 0 can look like an 8, and a 5 can look like a 2 — try alternate characters if you're unsure
  • The code is not case sensitive
Try entering the code again carefully from scratch. If you received the code digitally, copy and paste it instead of typing manually.

Step 2 — Check If You Already Redeemed It on Your Account
Check your Nintendo eShop purchase history
  1. 01

From the Nintendo Switch home screen, select Virtual Game Cards (the icon on your HOME Menu).

Select your user account. Enter your password or PIN if prompted.

  3. 03

All your digital purchases including DLC will appear here. Search for the game you were trying to redeem. If it appears — the code was already redeemed on this account. You can redownload the game without entering the code again.

To redownload: select the game from your Virtual Game Cards list → select Load on This System. The game will begin downloading immediately.

Step 3 — Check Your Other Nintendo Accounts

If the game doesn't appear on your current account, check whether you have multiple Nintendo Accounts. It's possible the code was redeemed on a different account — for example, a secondary account or a family member's account on the same console. To check another account: go to Virtual Game Cards from the HOME Menu and switch to a different user profile to view their purchase history. Only content purchased by that Nintendo Account will appear.

Step 4 — If You Didn't Redeem It, Contact the Seller

If you've confirmed the code doesn't appear in any of your Nintendo Accounts and you entered it correctly — the code was redeemed by someone else before you. This means either:
  • The code was sold to more than one customer (seller error or scam)
  • The code was visible in transit (for example, a scratched-off physical card that was copied)
  • The code was part of a fraudulent batch
What to do:
  1. Contact the seller or retailer you bought the code from with your proof of purchase — order confirmation, receipt, or transaction ID
  2. Request a replacement code or a refund
  3. If the seller can't help, contact the game's publisher — their contact details are usually listed on the code card or on nintendo.com in the game details
  4. If the game is published by Nintendo directly, contact Nintendo Support

Important: Nintendo Cannot Transfer or Reactivate Used Codes

Nintendo's policy is clear — they cannot replace codes that have already been redeemed, even if you believe it was done in error. Nintendo Support can confirm whether a code was redeemed and when, but they cannot reverse a redemption or issue a replacement. This is why it's important to:
  • Redeem codes immediately after purchase — don't store unredeemed codes for long periods
  • Buy from trusted sellers only
  • Never share your code before redeeming it yourself
  • Check the code carefully before contacting support — most "already used" reports turn out to be the code already redeemed on a secondary account
