How to Fix "This Code Wasn't Found" Xbox Error
2 views3 min read
You enter your Xbox code and get: "This code wasn't found — try re-entering it. If the code is damaged, contact the seller." Unlike other Xbox errors that point to one specific cause, this one has several. This guide covers every reason it happens and the fix for each one.
Reason 1: You Mistyped the Code
The most common cause by far. Xbox codes are 25 characters long and easy to misread, especially when printed small on a physical card or in a low-contrast email. One wrong character gives you this error every time.
Microsoft even tells you directly in the error message — these characters never appear in Xbox codes: A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, and 5. If you see any of these in your code, you are misreading another character. Here are the most common confusions:
- B and 8 — look nearly identical in some fonts
- G and 6 — similar shape
- Q and 9 — easy to mix up
- D and 0 — zero never appears, so if you see what looks like a 0, it's a D
- Z and 2 — similar in some fonts
Reason 2: The Code Is for a Different Platform
Some game keys are not Xbox codes — they're meant to be redeemed on Steam, the Epic Games Store, the game publisher's own website, or another platform entirely. Entering a Steam key on Xbox will always give you "this code wasn't found" because Xbox simply doesn't recognise it.
Check the listing or email where you got the code. It should clearly say Xbox or Microsoft. If it says Steam, Epic, GOG, EA App, or anything else — you need to redeem it on that platform instead, not on Xbox.
Reason 3: The Code Was Already Used
If you're confident the code is correct and it's definitely an Xbox code, it may have been used by someone else before you received it. This is more common with codes bought from lower-reputation gray market sellers where codes can be exposed before delivery.
In this case:
- Contact the seller immediately with your order confirmation and a screenshot of the error
- Request a replacement code or refund
- If the seller doesn't respond, dispute the charge with your bank or PayPal
Reason 4: The Code Is Expired
Some promotional codes — like ones bundled with a console purchase, a game, or a limited-time offer — have an expiry date. Once expired, the code shows as not found.
Standard Game Pass and Xbox Live subscription codes bought from retailers do not expire. But if your code came from a promotion, check the card, email, or packaging for an expiry date. If it's expired, contact the seller or Microsoft Support with proof of purchase — they may be able to issue a replacement.
Reason 5: You're Redeeming in the Wrong Place
- Go to redeem.microsoft.com in your browser and sign in with your Microsoft account.

- If you have the code in an email, copy and paste it directly into the field. Do not type it manually. This removes any chance of a typo.
- If you're reading from a physical card, go character by character. Remember — A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, and 5 never appear. If you think you see one of these, look again — it's a different character.

- Click Next. If it still shows "code wasn't found" after careful re-entry, the issue is not a typo — check if it's the right platform, or contact your seller.
Still Not Working?
If you've carefully re-entered the code, confirmed it's an Xbox code, and it still won't work — contact the seller with:
- Your order confirmation or receipt
- A screenshot of the error message
- The code you're trying to redeem
