How to Fix "This code can't be redeemed. It was purchased in a different region from your account." Xbox Error

5 min read
Got the error "This code can't be redeemed. It was purchased in a different region from your account" when redeeming an Xbox code? The key was bought in a different country than your Microsoft account region. Here's the fix — takes about 2 minutes.
Quick Fix
Change your Microsoft account region to match the key's region AND use a VPN set to that region. Both need to match. We recommend Opera Browser because it has a free built-in VPN — no signup or payment. Full steps below.
The Fix — 6 Steps
Warning
Microsoft limits how often you can change your account region. Don't switch back and forth multiple times in one day — they may temporarily block further changes. Redeem your code, then wait a few hours before switching back if you want to.
Follow these steps to redeem a region-locked code
- 01Find out which region your key is from. Check the product listing where you bought the key. It usually says the region — like "US," "EU," "TR" (Turkey), "AR" (Argentina), "BR" (Brazil), etc. If it doesn't say, contact the seller and ask before continuing.
- 02Download Opera Browser if you don't have it. Go to https://www.opera.com/download and install it. Opera has a free built-in VPN — no account or payment needed.
- 03Enable Opera's VPN. Open Opera, press Alt+P to open Settings, search for "VPN" in the settings search bar, and toggle "Enable VPN" on.
- 04Select the right VPN region. Click the VPN icon in the Opera address bar. Choose the region closest to your key's country: for US/AR/BR keys select "Americas," for EU/TR/UK keys select "Europe," for Asia/JP keys select "Asia."
- 05Change your Microsoft account region. With the VPN on, go to https://account.microsoft.com/profile in Opera. Sign in and click "Edit profile" or go to "Your info". Find the "Country/region" setting and change it to match the key's region. Click Save.
- 06Redeem your code. Still in Opera with the VPN on, go to https://redeem.microsoft.com/. Enter your 25-character code and confirm. It should work now!
Info
Optional — change your region back. After redeeming, you can return to account.microsoft.com/profile and switch your country back to your real one. The code is permanently activated on your account — changing the region back won't remove it. You can also turn off the Opera VPN now.
Tip
Use Opera's private browsing mode (Ctrl+Shift+N) with the VPN enabled for the cleanest redemption. This avoids any cached cookies from your real region interfering with the redemption.
Common Region Codes
Here are the most common region codes you'll see on game key listings and what VPN region to use:
US / NA / NTSC — United States / North America → VPN: Americas
EU / PAL / Europe — European Union → VPN: Europe
UK / GB — United Kingdom → VPN: Europe
TR — Turkey → VPN: Europe
AR — Argentina → VPN: Americas
BR — Brazil → VPN: Americas
JP / Asia — Japan / Asia Pacific → VPN: Asia
Global / Worldwide — Works everywhere, no VPN needed
Important Things to Know
Your games and subscriptions stay permanently. When you change your region and redeem a code, the content is added to your account forever. Changing the region back afterwards does NOT remove the game or subscription. It's completely safe.
Why Opera? We recommend Opera because the VPN is completely free, built into the browser, and requires no sign-up or credit card. Paid VPN options like NordVPN or ExpressVPN work too — but for a one-time code redemption, Opera's free VPN is more than enough.
Region changes have a cooldown. Microsoft typically allows region changes but limits how often. After a successful change, wait at least a few hours before switching back. If you change region too frequently, Microsoft may temporarily lock the option for several days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my Game Pass or game library if I change region?
No. Your purchases, subscriptions, and game library stay tied to your account regardless of region. Region only affects what new content you can buy or redeem.
Do I need the VPN on every time I play the game?
No. The VPN is only needed during the redemption step. Once the code is activated, you can turn off the VPN and play normally from anywhere.
Why didn't just changing my region work — why do I need a VPN too?
Microsoft checks BOTH your account region AND your IP address. If your account says Turkey but your IP says Latvia, Microsoft flags the mismatch and blocks the code. The VPN makes your IP match the account region.
Can I use a free VPN browser extension instead of Opera?
You can, but most free VPN extensions are unreliable or sell your data. Opera's built-in VPN is more trustworthy and doesn't require any extension installation.
Still Not Working?
If you've changed your region and used a VPN but still get the error: make sure both your account region AND VPN are set to the same country, try clearing your browser cookies before logging in, try Opera's private browsing mode (Ctrl+Shift+N) with the VPN enabled, or wait 24 hours after changing your region before trying to redeem.
