How to Fix "This Code Is Not Yet Active" Xbox Error

How to fix This Code Is Not Yet Active error when redeeming an Xbox Game Pass code

You enter your Xbox code and get: "This code is not yet active." The code looks valid, it's 25 characters, you entered it correctly — but it still won't work. Here's what's actually happening and what you need to do.

Quick Fix
The fix isn't on your end. The retailer who sold you the code never activated it at point of sale. Take a screenshot of the error, grab your order confirmation, and contact the seller directly. A legitimate seller will activate the code or send a replacement within a few hours.
Why This Error Happens

This error means your code exists in Microsoft's system but has not been activated by the retailer who sold it to you. Every Xbox code needs to be activated at the point of sale before it can be redeemed. If the retailer skipped this step — or their system had a glitch — the code stays locked in an inactive state.

This is not a problem with your Microsoft account and it's not something you can fix yourself. The retailer needs to activate the code on their end. The good news: once they do, the code works immediately.

Info
Microsoft Support cannot activate codes themselves — only the original seller can. Don't waste time on Microsoft Support chat trying to get them to "unlock" the code. They can confirm the code is inactive (which helps with disputes), but they cannot activate it for you.
Wait — Could It Be Something Else?

Before contacting the seller, double-check these two things: 1. Did you wait 24 hours after purchase? Some digital codes from certain platforms take up to 24 hours to fully activate after purchase. If you just bought it, wait a few hours and try again before reaching out. 2. Did you enter the code correctly? Xbox codes never contain the letters A, E, I, L, O, S, or U, and never contain the numbers 0, 1, or 5. If you see any of these characters in your code, you may be misreading another character. Try re-entering carefully.

Tip
Common character misreads on Xbox codes: the letter O doesn't exist in Xbox codes — if you see one, it's actually a zero... except zero ALSO doesn't exist in Xbox codes. Same for the letter I (could be a 7 or T). And the letter S (could be a 5, but 5 doesn't exist either, so it's likely an 8). Look very carefully at the suspect characters.
What to Do — Contact the Seller

Your first and only step is to contact the seller where you bought the code and provide them with proof of purchase. They either need to activate the code or issue you a replacement.

How to get your code fixed or replaced

  1. 01
Take a screenshot of the error message on your screen — either from the redeem page or your console. You'll need this as proof.
  2. 02
Find your order confirmation email or receipt from the seller. This is your proof of purchase. Don't delete it until your code is working.
  3. 03
Contact the seller directly — use their support page, live chat, or email. Send them: your order number or confirmation email, the code you're trying to redeem, and a screenshot of the "not yet active" error. A legitimate seller will either activate the code or send you a replacement within a few hours.
  4. 04
Once the seller confirms the code has been activated, go back to redeem.microsoft.com and enter the code again. It should now go through.
What If the Seller Won't Help?

If the seller refuses to activate the code or stops responding, here's what you can do:
  • Dispute the charge — if you paid by card or PayPal, open a dispute with your bank or PayPal for "item not as described." You have a strong case since the code is provably inactive.
  • Leave a review — report the issue on the marketplace platform so others are warned.
  • Contact Microsoft Support — they cannot activate codes themselves, but they can confirm the code's status and document the issue for you.

Warning
Don't wait too long to dispute. PayPal allows disputes up to 180 days after the transaction. Most credit cards allow 60-120 days via chargeback. Marketplace policies are usually stricter — typically 7-14 days. If the seller is ghosting you, open a payment dispute immediately rather than waiting and hoping they'll respond.

How to Avoid This in the Future

This error only happens with physical gift cards or codes from sellers who failed to activate them properly. When buying digital game keys:
  • Buy from reputable marketplaces with buyer protection
  • Always keep your order confirmation until the code is successfully redeemed
  • Redeem the code as soon as you receive it — don't wait weeks
  • If you buy a physical card from a retail store, make sure the cashier scans it at checkout to activate it
