The Backstory — Why Subnautica 2 Almost Didn't Make It

Subnautica 2's development was nearly derailed in mid-2025 when publisher Krafton (parent company of Unknown Worlds) abruptly fired the studio's three co-founders — CEO Ted Gill, designer Charlie Cleveland, and developer Max McGuire — and delayed the game from 2025 into 2026.

The fired leadership filed a 58-page wrongful termination lawsuit. Their claim: Krafton fired them specifically to avoid paying out a $250 million performance bonus that was tied to delivering Subnautica 2 by end of 2025. In March 2026, a Delaware court ruled in the founders' favor — Krafton breached its contract — and ordered Ted Gill reinstated as CEO of Unknown Worlds.
