PS5 Won't Connect to the Internet? How to Fix Any Network Error (2026)

Your PS5 won't connect to the internet or PSN? Whether you're seeing an error like NW-102216-2, NW-102417-5, WS-116449-5, or just a generic "cannot connect" message — these fixes work for all PS5 network errors. Follow them in order.

Fix 1 — Check PSN Server Status First

Before touching anything else — check if PlayStation's servers are down. If PSN is having an outage, no fix on your end will help. You just have to wait. Go to status.playstation.com and check the current status. If everything shows green — the problem is on your end. Move to the next fix.

Fix 2 — Restart Your PS5 and Router

The simplest fix that solves the majority of PS5 network errors.
  1. Fully turn off your PS5 — hold the power button until it beeps twice. Do not use Rest Mode.
  2. Unplug your router and modem from the power outlet
  3. Wait 60 seconds
  4. Plug the router and modem back in and wait for them to fully reconnect
  5. Turn your PS5 back on and test the connection
This clears your router's connection cache and forces a fresh connection. Most temporary network errors are fixed at this step.

Fix 3 — Run a Network Connection Test

Test your PS5 internet connection

  1. Go to Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection.
PS5 Settings showing Test Internet Connection option
  2. The test will check your IP address, internet connection, and PSN connection separately. Look at the results — if it fails at "IP Address" the problem is between your PS5 and router. If it fails at "Internet Connection" the problem is your router or ISP. If it fails at "PlayStation Network" PSN may be having issues.

Fix 4 — Switch to a Wired Connection

Wi-Fi is the most common cause of PS5 network errors — signal interference, weak signal, or too many devices on the same network. If possible, connect your PS5 directly to your router with an Ethernet cable. To switch: go to Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection and select your wired connection. This alone fixes most unstable connection errors. If you can't use a wired connection, move your PS5 closer to the router, or switch your router from 2.4GHz to 5GHz (or vice versa) in your Wi-Fi settings.

Fix 5 — Change Your DNS Settings

Change DNS to Google on PS5

  1. Go to Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection.
  2. Select your Wi-Fi network or wired connection → go to Advanced Settings.

  3. Set DNS Settings to Manual. Enter:
    • Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
    • Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4
These are Google's public DNS servers — faster and more reliable than your ISP's default DNS. Save and test the connection.

Fix 6 — Update PS5 System Software

An outdated system software version can cause connection issues. Check for updates at Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings → Update System Software. Install any available update and restart your PS5.

Fix 7 — Check Your NAT Type

After running a network test (Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection), check your NAT Type. If it shows Type 3 (Strict) this means your router is blocking some connections and will cause issues with PSN and multiplayer. To fix a strict NAT type:
  • Log into your router settings (usually at 192.168.1.1 in your browser)
  • Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) — this usually resolves NAT Type 3 automatically
  • Alternatively, open these ports for PS5: TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP: 3478, 3479
After changing router settings, restart both your router and PS5 and run the connection test again.

Still Not Working?

If none of the above fixes the issue:
  • Delete and re-add your Wi-Fi network — Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection → select your network → Delete → reconnect fresh
  • Check if other devices can connect to the same Wi-Fi — if they can't, the problem is your router or ISP, not your PS5
  • Contact your ISP if your internet is down on all devices
  • Contact PlayStation Support at playstation.com/support if the problem is specific to PSN
