Whether you just bought an Xbox Game Pass code, an Xbox Live Gold key, or a digital game code — you need to redeem it to activate it on your account. There are four different ways to redeem an Xbox code, and this guide covers all of them step by step.
Method 1: Redeem on the Web (Fastest)
This is the fastest and most reliable method. It works from any device — PC, phone, or tablet. No Xbox console needed.
Redeem your code on the web
- Go to https://redeem.microsoft.com/ in your browser.

- Sign in with the Microsoft account you want to activate the code on. Make sure it's the same account linked to your Xbox.

- Enter your 25-character code in the text field. The code looks like this: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. You can type it with or without the dashes.

- Click Next and confirm the redemption. You'll see a confirmation message with what you just activated. Done!

Method 2: Redeem on Xbox Console
If you're on your Xbox Series X, Series S, or Xbox One, you can redeem codes directly from the console.
Redeem your code on Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide menu.
- Navigate to Store (or go to the Microsoft Store app on the home screen).
- Select "Redeem a code" from the menu. It's usually under the three-dot menu or at the bottom of the Store page.
- Enter your 25-character code using the on-screen keyboard or the Xbox app as a remote keyboard. Press Confirm to redeem.
Method 3: Redeem on the Xbox App (Mobile)
The Xbox app on your phone is a quick way to redeem codes when you're not near your console.
Redeem your code on the Xbox app
- Open the Xbox app on your phone (available on https://apps.apple.com/app/xbox/id736179781 iOS and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.xboxone.smartglass Android.
- Tap your profile icon in the bottom right corner, then tap the settings gear icon.
- Scroll down and tap "Redeem a code". This will open the Microsoft redemption page in your browser.
- Sign in if needed, enter your code, and confirm. The content will be added to your account.
Method 4: Redeem on Microsoft Store (Windows PC)
If you're on a Windows PC, you can redeem codes through the Microsoft Store app.
Redeem your code on Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store app on your Windows PC. You can find it in the Start menu or taskbar.
- Click on your profile icon in the top right corner and select "Redeem code or gift cards".

- Enter your 25-character code and click Redeem. The content will download or activate on your account.
Which Method Should I Use?
Use the web method (redeem.microsoft.com) — it's the fastest, works on any device, and you don't need to download anything. The console method is convenient if you're already gaming. The app and Microsoft Store methods are good alternatives but they both redirect to the web page anyway.
Common Issues When Redeeming
"Check the instructions that came with your code" — This means you have a Trial key and your account already had a subscription. You need a new Microsoft account. Read our /blog/how-to-fix-check-the-instructions-that-came-with-your-code-xbox-error full guide to fix this error.

"This code has already been redeemed"— Someone else used the code, or you already redeemed it on another account. Check your subscription at https://account.microsoft.com/services. If it's not there, contact the seller.
"This code is not valid" — Double-check you entered the code correctly. Make sure there are no typos and that you're not confusing similar characters like 0 (zero) and O (letter), or 1 and I. If the code still doesn't work, contact the seller.
Region lock errors — Some codes only work in specific regions. If you get a region error, the code was purchased for a different country than your Microsoft account is set to. You may need to change your account region temporarily, but this can cause issues — contact the seller first.
