You try to redeem a PSN card or voucher and get error WC-40377-1 or E-82000138 with the message: "Failed to add funds to wallet using a voucher or PlayStation® card." This error has several causes — here's how to identify and fix yours quickly.
PSN wallet balance in PlayStation Store

Reason 1: PSN Wallet Limit Exceeded

Your PSN wallet has a maximum balance of $250 USD (or the equivalent in your local currency). If redeeming the code would push your balance over this limit — even by $1 — the redemption will fail with this error. Fix: Check your current wallet balance in the PlayStation Store. If you're close to the $250 limit, spend some of your existing balance first, then try redeeming the code again. PSN wallet codes cannot be partially redeemed — the full value must fit within your remaining limit.

Reason 2: Wrong Code Entry

A single wrong character will block the redemption. PSN codes are 12 characters and easy to misread. Watch out for:
  • 0 (zero) and O (letter O)
  • 1 (one) and I (capital i) or l (lowercase L)
  • 2 and Z
If you received the code by email or from a seller's website, copy and paste it directly rather than typing it manually.

Reason 3: Code Has Expired or Is Not Yet Available

Some PSN wallet codes have an expiry date or an activation date — meaning they become valid only from a certain date. Check your physical card, order confirmation email, or the seller's listing for any dates. If the code has expired, contact the seller with proof of purchase for a replacement. If it's not yet active, simply wait until the activation date and try again.

Reason 4: Wrong Region

PSN wallet cards are region and currency locked. A US card cannot be redeemed on a UK account. A EUR card cannot be redeemed on a US account. How to check your account region: If the card region doesn't match your account, contact the seller for a replacement or refund. There is no workaround — PlayStation Support cannot override region locks.

Reason 5: Code Already Used

Check your transaction history before contacting anyone — the code may have already been redeemed: Wallet top-ups appear as "Wallet Funding" in the transaction list. If it's there, the code worked — check your current balance. If it's not there and you've confirmed the code is correct, contact the seller for a replacement.

Reason 6: Card Not Activated by the Retailer

Physical PSN wallet cards must be activated at the point of sale. If you have a physical card that fails with this error, return to the retailer with your receipt and ask them to verify it was activated at purchase.
